Dus sloeg Nederland… Lees verder »Rollen op mijn rode racemonster

Gorillas in the mist

I have seen the mountain gorillas. Gorilla tracking is one of Uganda’s main tourist attractions and when I was living in Kampala I could not but make the trip down south. And what a trip it was! It involved lots of rain, mist, mud, having our car pushed up some hills by a bunch of friendly villagers, an eight-hour long hike through the forest and some very impressive primates. That… Lees verder »Gorillas in the mist

On top of the Nyiragongo

‘Welcome to the country everybody says you should not go!’. These were the words with which Daniel, our tour guide, welcomed us to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Ok, at that time we were still in Gisenyi, Rwanda but the message was clear. Everyone is very conscious of the fact that DRC is not a prime tourist destination, or a completely safe one for that matter. So why on… Lees verder »On top of the Nyiragongo

Feeling comfortable in Lebanon

At the moment of writing this piece I am flying somewhere over the European mainland. I am returning from a one-week work trip to Lebanon. Travelling for work is always different. I prepare for meetings or workshops and do my reading on the context of whatever I will be doing. But somehow I always seem to forget about informing myself of the country I am travelling to. Except for security… Lees verder »Feeling comfortable in Lebanon

Mighty glaciers and tiny houses in Iceland

Iceland had been on my wish list of countries to visit for quite a while now. Inspired by stories from friends that had been there and all the jaw-dropping photos on the internet I was expecting a country offering sweeping landscapes and stunning views. So when it presented itself, I took the opportunity to visit the southern part of the country. The thing with expectations though, is that when they… Lees verder »Mighty glaciers and tiny houses in Iceland

Travelling the Trans-Mongolian

I do not know where to start. How to describe a trip through three countries, across two continents in just 18 days? There are plenty of words that come to mind: views, lemmings, trees, more trees, desert, camel, more trees, heat, cold, encounters, Google Translate, vodka and some more trees. Above all, taking the Trans Mongolian Express from Moscow to Beijing is a journey. According to the Oxford Dictionary a… Lees verder »Travelling the Trans-Mongolian

Travelling some stans

In the summer of 2018, I travelled to two countries: one of which I still have difficulty pronouncing the name and another of which most people do not have a clue as to where it is located. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, more or less the last places on earth I ever expected to visit. The former bordering Afghanistan and the latter, well, I did not really know what was happening there.… Lees verder »Travelling some stans
